Dear Von

Q: Dear Von,

Do you know of a good brand of tattoo cover-up makeup? Had I known my friend was getting married & that I was to be in the wedding, I might not have chopped off all of my hair exposing my tattoo.

A: Dear Irene Ink,

Covering up a tattoo is more about application, less about the brand of  make up.

First, cleanse the area to remove sebum, the protective oils our skin excretes, & dirt. Next, exfoliate the area with a body scrub. Pat dry.

Using the tips of your fingers, apply a foundation that matches your skin tone on that area of the body. Think of patting the foundation into the skin rather than smearing it across the area.

Next, apply a small amount of concealer to the pad of your ring finger. Gently pat the concealer over the tattoo focusing on the inked area- not the surrounding skin. It is very important that the concealer not be lighter than your skin tone- we do not want to 'highlight' the area.

Using a wedge sponge apply powder. Again, press the powder into the skin as opposed to wiping the sponge across the area.

Finally, take a large powder brush and apply a loose setting powder over all exposed skin around the tattoo.  This will help to blend the tattoo area with the rest of your 'naked' skin.

Have fun at the wedding!
